Jennifer Woofter – “One of the things I love most about my work is that it changes every day”

May 6th 2023

Jennifer Woofter is a recognized sustainability expert, specializing in sustainability strategy and implementation.

Jennifer draws upon more than 20 years in the fields of corporate social responsibility, ethical investing, and organizational accountability systems to help companies make the leap between good intentions and long-term sustainable performance.

“One of the things I love most about my work is that it changes every day. Whether it’s helping a company take its first tentative steps to understand what environmental and social issues are material to its stakeholders, or running a climate risk scenario workshop for a Board of Directors grappling with what a net-zero emissions target means for their business strategy. I am challenged every day to be creative, to be analytical, to be pragmatic, and to help my clients be bolder than they could imagine.”

Jennifer says that over her career, she has worked with more than 200 companies on corporate sustainability projects including sustainability planning, carbon footprint analysis, stakeholder engagement, training and facilitation, life cycle assessment, and sustainability reporting.

She currently manages the SSC Consultant Network, an association of more than 650 professionals with expertise in virtually every area of sustainability.

“My best tip is to always ‘take a step back’. Often, we dive into sustainability solutions that solve the immediate need but neglect the larger context. I always encourage colleagues and clients to step back and evaluate how a given problem or solution fits into the larger system. For those who are interested, I think that ‘systems thinking’ is a great tool to bring to sustainability work.”

She has also authored several sustainability-related articles and reports. Jennifer speaks regularly on panels, working groups, webinars and at conferences.

She is a regular contributor to publications including Environmental Leader, CSRwire, and the Toronto Sustainability Speakers Series.

Jennifer has been featured in a variety of publications, including a profile article in the Washington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, Inc. Magazine, Deliver Magazine, Sprig.com, SustainLane, Management Consultant Quarterly, and the Maryland Daily Record. In 2007, she received a citation from Maryland State for her contributions to promoting green business.
