KPMG in Slovakia and Solved have joined forces to develop a new White Paper within the White Winters programme. The paper will explore how winter tourism, ski resorts and mountain economies can adapt and remain resilient in a changing climate.

Winter tourism is facing increasing pressure from changing climate conditions, shorter and less predictable snow seasons, rising operational costs and evolving visitor expectations. At the same time, these challenges are creating opportunities for innovation, investment and new approaches to mountain tourism.

The white paper will draw on climate evidence, market research, stakeholder perspectives and business analysis, with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe, the Alpine region and Northern Europe.

The research will examine:

  • climate and environmental impacts on winter tourism;
  • economic, investment and real estate implications;
  • changing visitor behaviour and market dynamics;
  • sustainability, adaptation and diversification strategies;
  • innovation, technology and emerging solutions; and
  • practical recommendations for ski resorts and other stakeholders.

Solved will lead engagement with ski resorts and other winter tourism stakeholders through the White Winters network and draw on its experience of connecting resorts with solution providers and industry partners. KPMG will contribute expertise in sustainability, climate risk, economics, investment, valuation and business strategy.

“White Winters was created to bring the challenges facing winter sports to the same table as the people and solutions that can address them. This research is a natural next step. By combining the White Winters network with KPMG’s analytical, sustainability and financial expertise, we can turn industry insights into practical recommendations for the future”, says Santtu Hulkkonen, CEO of Solved and Program Director of White Winters.

“Climate change is increasingly becoming a business and investment issue. Its implications extend beyond snow conditions to infrastructure, asset values, financing and the long-term competitiveness of mountain destinations. This research will help decision-makers better understand both the risks and opportunities ahead”, says Michal Maxim, Associate Partner, Sustainability and Financial Risk Management, KPMG in Slovakia.

The research will draw on perspectives from ski resorts, tourism operators, industry associations, investors, solution providers and other stakeholders.

We invite ski resorts and industry participants to contribute through interviews and the White Winters stakeholder survey. Their insights will help identify practical approaches to adaptation and long-term resilience.

The White Paper is planned for publication in spring 2027. Further information will be shared through KPMG, Solved and White Winters channels.
