Pekka Huhtala – Tackling the challenges of climate change and helping people to develop their businesses

Pekka Huhtala is passionate about tackling the challenges of climate change. In addition, he has a decent understanding of how the Finnish society works from both business and political points of view.

“I enjoy learning something new. Solving challenges most of the time involves learning and learning by doing. I get to apply my skills and knowledge and thus solve challenges and make the world a bit more sustainable one challenge at a time.”

Pekka has a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management and he has been working as a consultant for a few years, helping companies focus on their value creation and value proposition. His background includes managing product development in IT companies.

What is the key to finding solutions?

“Keep your eyes and mind open. It is too easy to stick to business-as-usual and become unable to see the big picture. Open-mindedness is also a critical part of successful futures studies. In problem solving, I prefer a design thinking process where you first diverge to understand the issue from multiple perspectives and then converge to create insights and a clear definition of the problem. Then you diverge again to propose multiple solutions and converge to select the one matching the requirements, be it optimality, efficiency, robustness or something else.”
